F.A.Q.'s
1. What will I be studying during the school?
Topics vary, and are different every year. Past schools have had lectures on the Character and Nature of God, Relationships, Hearing the Voice of God, Frontier Missions, Worship, Intercession, Evangelism, Identity & Destiny, Surf Ministry, Grace, Discipleship, Inner Healing, Justice, Biblical Worldview, Fear of God, and the Cross. Each topic will last a week, and a different speaker will be coming to teach for each week. Although the list of topics is extensive, there may be a new topic or two for your school!
2. Should I bring my board?
Yup! Bring your boards too, if you have more than one, go ahead and bring them, you’ll like the option of changing with the swells. You may need to check with the airlines about their rules and pricing, if you have questions, we’ll help you get answers. For the outreach, we will decide later if we’re taking boards or getting them local there.
3. What is the surf like?
Yes, the cold Pacific Ocean requires a wetsuit. So if you have one, bring it. A wetsuit will be provided if you don’t have one. Some students prefer to wear booties too. The surf varies with swells coming in and out differently along our coast. Although the summer is a little smaller than the winter, there are still waves to ride. If there is not a swell within walking distance, there is probably one within driving! Overseas on outreach, the breaks are beautiful, and the surf in Nicaragua has almost year round offshore winds. But the water temp is warmer, only a rash guard or spring suit needed.
4. What airport do I fly into?
We have several airport options for students. SLO airport (SBP) is the closest. Santa Maria(SMX), and Santa Barbara(SBA) are a little farther. Then Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO). If you make arrangements to fly into Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, then you’ll also need to get a bus, or train to the Pismo area. Staff are available to pick up students from the Pismo area, SLO airport, and Santa Maria airport.
5. Where will I be living?
For the duration of the lecture phase, you’ll be living in a local house in Pismo Beach. Within walking distance from the ocean, it is perfect to accommodate school AND surf. We value the mutual discipleship that occurs when we live together in community. You’ll likely share a room with several other surfers, and be eating, studying, surfing, and doing life together. Outreach accommodations are always fun, and decided last minute. Be prepared to sleep anywhere!
