WHY SURFERS?

All boarding sports (Surfing, Skateboarding, Snowboarding, etc.) started out as counter cultural activities. Forty years ago when people started surfing, it was because they wanted nothing to do with the world’s system and they decided to “stick it to the man”. They would much rather catch a good wave than work from 9:00 to 5:00. During these times if you participated in any of these sports, you were labeled as a rebel. Although these sports have become mainstream today, the roots of their beginnings still remain.

Christianity is counter cultural as well. And although in some countries it has become mainstream, true Christianity does not go mainstream! Let us put it another way: our relationship with God is not mainstream. It goes against people's grain. It makes people uncomfortable. When practiced in its fullest potential, we should be despised for it. And when you think about it, a surfer/skateboarder can relate to that. Lets take our Christianity and our surfing to the un-reached places of this world! As Paul says, "How then can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone speaking to them?"

We believe that surfers have an important role to play in the great commission. Surfers have learned to be comfortable in the most uncomfortable situations just to get some good waves. We want to grab that same passion and use it to GO and live anywhere, sleep anywhere, and eat anything so that others can hear Christ’s good news. We believe that God has given some of us at YWAM Pismo Beach a vision to see surfers touch the world, and we would be stoked to have you guys and girls a part of this vision. Lets lay down our lives together to see our Father’s kingdom come!
